The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Zululand today calls on Ulundi Spar to fund an independent food safety audit of their outlet, with the results made public.
This follows reports that they were allegedly expired food to unsuspecting residents. The reports were confirmed by Ulundi Local Municipality officials who conducted a raid at the premises.
Selling expired and rotten products is a serious public health violation. It places the lives of vulnerable residents, many of whom already face economic hardship, at risk. The people of Ulundi deserve more than apologies, they deserve dignity, accountability, and safe food.
We therefore call on Ulundi Spar to further :
– Provide refunds to those affected to restore community trust.
– Commit to strict compliance with the Consumer Protection Act, ensuring that no expired goods ever reach their shelves again.
The DA will also write to the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC) and the Department of Health to demand stronger oversight and enforcement of food safety standards in rural towns such as Ulundi. No community is too small or too poor to deserve safe, quality food.
The DA remains committed to standing up for the rights and dignity of all residents. We will continue to be a strong voice for accountability and fairness in Ulundi and across KwaZulu-Natal.
