The Democratic Alliance (DA) in uPhongolo municipality notes the arrest of an uPhongolo Municipality councillor who is also a senior member of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), on allegations of being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

We welcome the swift action of the law enforcement agencies, who yesterday arrested the councillor at an IFP meeting on the party’s by-election performance meeting.

The arrest raises serious questions about the conduct of elected representatives and the possible abuse of public office.

We express deep concern over the nature of the allegations. No public representative should be above the law, and any criminal behaviour must be dealt with decisively and without political interference.

We call on SAPS to conduct a thorough investigation and allow the law to take its course. Accountability and transparency are critical in restoring trust in local government.

The DA will continue to monitor this case closely and will not hesitate to act should further evidence emerge that impacts governance in the uPhongolo Municipality.
