The Democratic Alliance (DA) is pleased to announce the success of a critical Notice of Motion passed on Friday, 28 March 2025, during a special council meeting in the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, which was moved by the DA.

The motion sought to credit residents for services not rendered during the strike – which heavily affected the residents of Ray Nkonyeni from last year October to this year February. However, the council agreed to a one-month credit on the municipality bill of residents from Ramsgate to Hibberdene of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality for refuse removal only. This is still a significant victory for the ratepayer of RNM.

This victory is an important step towards ensuring that local governments are held accountable to the communities they serve. For far too long, residents have been burdened with unjust payments for basic services that were promised but never delivered and, in this case, billed for services they never received. The DA is committed to ensuring that ratepayers hard-earned money is spent where it belongs — improving the lives of residents through quality service delivery.

This motion sends a strong message that municipalities must be held accountable for service delivery failures and that residents should not bear the cost of inefficiency, corruption, or neglect.

The DA believes that local government must work for the people. When municipalities fail to meet their obligations, residents lose faith in the system. This motion is a step towards restoring that trust and ensuring municipalities are not allowed to profit from their failure to deliver services.

The DA will continue to monitor this issue closely to ensure that the repayment process is carried out without delay and that there is full transparency regarding the funds involved.

This success marks a critical turning point, and we will not rest until every cent owed to residents is repaid. We urge the municipality to act swiftly in complying with this motion. The DA will continue to push for the highest standards of governance and service delivery at all levels of government.
