The DA strongly condemns the recent taxi strikes in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), which saw long distance taxis blocking major routes within our province. The rule of law must be applied without fear or favour.

This ongoing tactic by the taxi industry is nothing more than bullying and a clear indication that the industry believes it is above the law – a narrative that has existed for far too long.

The DA believes that to clean up the taxi industry, implementing programmes such as Operation Shanela, are good steps in the right direction.

It is unacceptable that the taxi industry continues to flout the law and in so doing, endanger many lives. This places an enormous burden on our Law Enforcement.

The disruption of public transport has also caused real hardship for commuters and ultimately affected KZN’s economy.

A balanced approach is required to address the issues faced by the taxi industry while also ensuring that public safety and the well-being of our residents are prioritized.

There has to be robust and constructive engagement between government, the taxi industry, and other stakeholders to address concerns and avoid disruptions such as strike action.

The DA calls for improved taxi industry regulation, including stricter driver standards, in order to ensure the safety of passengers.

There must also be a strong focus on finding long-term solutions to the issues leading to taxi strikes.

The DA urges MEC Duma to continue with Operation Shanela. We call on KZN Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to provide on the ground support in order to ensure peace and order is maintained.
