The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal has noted the media statement and comments by the ANC today, a partner in the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU).
The DA remains an independent political party in the Government and will continue to serve the best interests of our voters and residents at large.
There remains no coalition agreement between political parties in local government despite our best attempts to do so, using eThekwini as an example of how this could work. Instead, the ANC opted to go into coalition with the EFF who are not in the GPU. The same EFF Councillor that the ANC called “clueless”.
The actions of the ANC in Gauteng when they removed Cilliers Brink has only compounded this deadlock on a working relationship in local government in KZN.
Furthermore, the DA cannot be expected, nor will we agree to, to fix another political party’s internal problems in local government. We will also not be participants in implementing other parties’ ideology which has led to a 42% rate in unemployment.
That is not our mandate or responsibility as this would erode our integrity and independence as a political party.
It is evidently clear that an urgent meeting of parties in the GPU is required and which we have called for since August. We simply cannot delay this any longer to ensure the province remains stable and service delivery focused.
The DA in KZN calls on parties to show our equal commitment to the people of KwaZulu-Natal.
