The Democratic Alliance in eThekwini welcomes the passing of a motion for the municipality to investigate establishing a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) desk.

The motion that was submitted on 12 September 2024 was passed during Full Council on Wednesday, 06 November 2024 (view here).

It will involve all stakeholders and will equip us to fight for and assist GBV victims promptly across the city.

In almost all spheres of government we keep saying enough is enough. This scourge has been reduced to just 16 days of activism while victims are faced with abuse on a daily.

Many municipalities across the country do have this desk and we have seen the difference it has made; it cannot be that a Metropolitan in a province dubbed the “Rape and murder capital” of the country does not have a GBV desk.

We have had enough of our women getting abused and killed, it is time we take action.

The DA will follow up and monitor the implementation of this motion and ultimately ensure that this desk is established, and victims get the assistance that they so desperately need.

We are committed to making our communities safe for the most vulnerable
