DA KZN Youth withdraw from SAYC following threats against its member

The Democratic Alliance Youth (DAY) in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has written to the South African Youth Council (SAYC) leadership in the province to inform them of our intention to withdraw from all regions in the province.

Furthermore, the DAY will propose a complete non-affiliation to this body across the country at the DA Federal Executive meeting to be held this weekend.

This follows an attack on KZN DAY Deputy Chairperson in Administration, Councillor Ngiphiwe Xulu in Pietermaritzburg on Monday.

Councillor Xulu was deployed as part of the SAYC Provincial Task delegation to oversee an elective process in the UMgungundlovu Region.

As the process was to unfold, ANC Youth League members wanted to halt proceedings on account of the passing of one of their members, who is not part of SAYC, to which Councillor Xulu sympathised with, however, alluded to the fact that SAYC is made up of different organisations, including non-partisan organisations and that money had already been spent to convene the meeting.

It was at this point that she was targeted by members of the ANC Youth League in the Region hurling insults at her and addressing her as DA member while she was present as a SAYC PEC Deployee.

She was then tipped off to hide out in the bathrooms as there were rumors that members of the ANCYL are waiting to “deal with her” outside the buildings. She was escorted by security to get to her transport with threats of physical violence all the way out of the venue.

The meeting was postponed to Friday, 1 November 2024.

The DA Youth in KZN strongly condemns this behaviour towards a woman at the hands of the ANC Youth League under the umbrella of the SA Youth Council who themselves must decide on whether their interests lie with the ANC Youth League or members of the broader society.
