The DA in Msunduzi calls on the establishment of a specialized enforcement unit to deal directly with illegal electricity connections in the City, this as more than 60 homes were destroyed last night after a catastrophic fire broke out at the Jika Joe informal settlement.

This unit will work directly with Electricity Management to ensure that the situation is dealt with daily.

The scourge of illegal connections is being treated like the “Elephant in the room” that the ANC led Municipality refuses to deal with.

The continued loss of lives due to a lack of political will to deal with this crisis is only creating an even bigger problem that will continue to grow if not dealt with head on.

Not only is are the losses of revenue devastating, but the danger to lives seems to be completely neglected.

We need to implement our by-laws equitably, and without proper enforcement this will not be possible.

The municipality cannot keep their heads in the sand when people’s lives are at stake. The DA will pursue this aggressively until this situation is under control with a clear plan.
