IFP-run AbaQulusi fails to table Special Ethics Committee report implicating the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Speaker

After a number of requests sent to the Speaker of AbaQulusi Municipality, Councillor Micheal Khumalo, asking him to call a special meeting so that the Special Ethics committee report can be tabled for consideration to council as there’s been serious allegations of abuse of taxpayer’s money in this municipality, the speaker has once again refused to accept this.

He has also failed to respond on other three previous requests dated 15 June 2022, 14 August 2022 and 19 August 2022.

The DA in AbaQulusi Municipality is deeply concerned about the way the IFP speaker has treated our numerous requests on this crucial matter. The IFP leadership continues to show lack of commitment to good and transparent governance. To make matters worse, yesterday the speaker removed Cllr. Swelakhe Shelembe for constantly asking reasons for the failure of the speaker to include this matter on the council agenda.

The speaker failed to provide answers and to give valid reasons on omitting this item on yesterday’s special council meeting and the other two previous meetings. It is clear that the speaker along with the IFP have something to hide and will do everything in their powers to prevent council from holding those implicated in wrongdoing to account to the people of Abaqulusi.

The DA will now consider its options on this matter which may include writing to the MEC of COGTA, Sihle Zikalala to request his intervention and also to put a motion of no confidence against Abaqulusi Office bearers if the speaker fails to set a date for the report to be tabled within 14 days, as he promised the entire council yesterday afternoon.
