The DA in Uthukela is saddened by the fatal shooting of a security guard at the Forderville pump station in Estcourt around midnight last night.

We are calling on the police to swiftly arrest the perpetrator(s) and ensure that they are brought to book.

We would like to relay our condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.

It is alleged that the security guard that was shot, is the late father of a current sitting IFP Councillor in Estcourt.

We are further calling on the Uthukela District to increase security at all bulk water infrastructure with immediate effect. The District needs to ensure that there is enough manpower in these areas so criminals don’t find it easy to attack and ensure that water sources remain safe for communities to consume.

Police also need to get on with the investigations into all acts of water infrastructure sabotage as it is terrorising, and negatively affecting the livelihoods of many communities.

The current situation, with alleged political sabotage that result in prolonged outages, must be dealt with decisively by the elected IFP leadership. The lacklustre response to date is now culminating in a situation that is spiralling out of control.

The DA will endeavour to support and assist with effective and constructive measures to stabilise and improve basic service delivery in the region.
