The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ugu has written to the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lt. General Jula requesting a satellite police station in the Phungashe area on the South Coast.

This area has been experiencing a series of robberies, the most recent being an armed robbery that took place at the local post office last Tuesday.  Due to this, hundreds of struggling residents had to return home without getting their monthly social grants.

The local post office and Boxer stores have become the targets for criminals and unfortunately, the nearest police station, which is situated in St. Faiths is 16 km away. The DA is concerned that if these incidents continue, this may lead to the relocation of the post office and the Boxer store, which will be devastating to the already disadvantaged residents of Phungashe. It is for this reason that we are calling on the Police Commissioner to give this request the urgent attention it deserves.

The Democratic Alliance will continue to fight for all people to live in a safe environment that provides social and economic opportunity for all.
