The Moses Mabhida Stadium, built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, is an iconic feature of the eThekwini skyline that all residents are proud of. The maintenance of this asset should be prioritized as it is the only stadium in the country that generates revenue for the city on a daily basis through its many attractions. Instead, the condition of the stadium is degenerating rapidly at the hands of rapacious ANC politicians who care more about filling their pockets through corrupt activities.

The decay is exemplified by the broken down SkyCar which has become a death trap due to a lack of maintenance. The SkyCar, which has not been in use since October 2018, is awaiting spare parts from Switzerland, which is no doubt going to be a huge expense for the municipality. Of concern is that not a single report has come to the attention of the committee, outlining the challenges or costs associated with the repairs, since it broke down in October last year.

It was only when the DA met with some of the stadium management and specifically requested detailed reports, did the officials agree to present a report.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in eThekwini is, however, gravely concerned by the actions of an incompetent ANC government which plunged the City into chaos. ANC supporters of embattled Mayor Zandile Gumede closed down City Hall last week which sparked a violent confrontation with the local SAPS. As a result of this illegal action, various committee meetings were unable to deal with the business of the people.

The Community Services committee which was due to receive a detailed report on the status of the Moses Mabhida Stadium and Sky Car had to abandon their meetings.

This state of affairs is a disgrace and untenable. The Democratic Alliance is determined to act in the best interest of our people. We represent the members of our society first and place politicians and the political parties last.
