The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KZN welcomes an operation carried out by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Durban Metro Police in Phoenix where drugs worth millions of rands were seized.

This follows the DA’s call on Tuesday during the budget debate on Community Safety, where MEC Mxolisi Kaunda and SAPS Phoenix were criticized for their failure to act against a list of 52 known drug dealers in the Phoenix community. This despite the information, the DA handed over to the Phoenix Police Station over two years ago.

I am elated that a joint operation was conducted by SAPS and Metro Police and that millions of rands worth of drugs were seized.

We welcome this operation by the security services and call on them to act against the many other known dealers in the Phoenix area.

Drug abuse contributes tremendously to the high rate of crime; it cannot be that drug dealers are pocketing millions at the expense of our safety.

This is one step closer to a drug- free community. The DA will continue to act in the interests of the community by putting pressure on the MEC to respond and act promptly to crime.
