The DA is deeply saddened by yesterday’s learner transport crash in Mount Moriah, KwaMashu, which tragically claimed the life of a young child and left at least 14 others injured. Our heartfelt condolences go to the grieving family, the injured learners and their community during this incredibly difficult time.

Incidents involving learner transport are particularly distressing, as they involve the safety of children travelling to and from school. This makes it critical that all learner transport vehicles meet the highest safety standards.

While the full circumstances surrounding the crash must still be confirmed, early reports suggesting possible mechanical failure raise further concerns around vehicle roadworthiness and oversight.

The DA therefore calls on the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. If negligence, poor maintenance or non-compliance with safety regulations is found to have contributed to this incident, those responsible must be held fully accountable.

The DA also urges the driver involved in the crash to present himself to authorities as investigations continue.

Every learner deserves to travel to school safely. As a responsible partner within KwaZulu-Natal’s (KZN’s) Government of Provincial Unity (GPU), the DA remains committed to working with all stakeholders to strengthen oversight and ensure that learner transport safety is prioritised across our province.
