In March 2022 I submitted an official question to Nkosi Malinga, the Okhahlamba Municipal Manager to obtain details of alleged missuse of municipal resources by embattled Okhahlamba Mayor, Councillor Vikizitha Mlotshwa. To date there has been no response.

In the Isolezwe edition of the 17 April 2022 however,  Okhahlamba Mayor Vikizitha Mlotshwa was quoted in what amounts to an admission that he used Municipal Resources for his personal wedding celebration. The Mayor told the newspaper that “we always have events in this hall and not everyone that hires the hall pays for it as I also did not pay when I had my event.” This latest development again shows how the Mlotshwa should resign immediately as the Mayor and an investigation launched into these allegations.

It appears that not only did Cllr Mlotshwa contravene the Code of Conduct for Councillors, but he apparently also broke Okhahlamba’s own Municipal By-Laws.  Cllr Mlotshwa benefitted personally from the use of Municipal Property in contradiction with the Systems Act but he also interfered with staff operations.

Okhahlamba residents certainly cannot afford to have a Mayor who thinks Okhahlamba is his own playground.

The DA is equally concerned that funding budgeted for the Okhahlamba Traffic Department was allegedly used to bankroll the wedding celebrations of Cllr Mlotshwa. Apparently millions of Rands in municipal funding was alleged to have been used to fund this wedding.

It is clear that despite not having a majority on the Okhahlamba Council, the ANC are still governing Okhahlamba through their proxy by supporting a Mayor that has been accused of graft and scandal.

The DA will continue to use every avenue available, including a request for the Public Protector to do a full investigation, to get to the bottom of these serious allegations of corruption levelled against the Okhahlamba Mayor, Cllr Vikizitha Mlotshwa.
