The Democratic Alliance (DA) in eThekwini welcomes the announcement from eThekwini Mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda, that eThekwini municipal officials will undergo lifestyle audits.

As we indicated before the Mayor’s election, the DA will support all decisions that work to reverse the rot in Durban and turn things around for the better. The rooting out of officials who line their own pockets at the expense of communities is a critical step in that regard. We support it wholeheartedly.

However, the rot in the eThekwini Municipality has started from the head. It began with corrupt ANC politicians and leaders who set out to loot the city’s coffers. The corruption case against Zandile Gumede and her co-accused is a prime example of this, and we believe it is the tip of the iceberg regarding corrupt political activities in the city.

62 councillors remain in office despite being accused of being involved in Zandile Gumede’s DSW schemes in court. Despite Mayor Kaunda’s administration having the legal authority and obligation to do so, these Councillors have not been formally charged or investigated via the municipal Ethics Committee.

The clean-up operation in eThekwini has to start immediately, and it has to start with the people who brought this municipality to its knees: politicians.

For that reason, the DA challenges Mayor Kaunda to make himself and his Executive Committee team’s personal finances available for lifestyle audits as a matter of urgency.

As DA leader in the city, I’m prepared to do the same, and ensure that the team I serve with is only making money from lawful salaries and income.

Will Mayor Kaunda ensure that politicians lead the charge in this regard? Will he ensure that his own team is squeaky clean? The ball is in his court.
