The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KwaZulu-Natal extends its deepest condolences to the families of those involved in Saturday night’s horrific head-on collision, on the N11 Model Kloof near Ladysmith, which claimed the lives of eight people including two children.

According to preliminary reports, a Porsche with no number plates was allegedly speeding when it had a head-on collision with a Toyota Fortuner. The Porsche caught alight and four people travelling in it were burned beyond recognition. Four people, two adults and two children, travelling in the Toyota Fortuner also died on the scene.

Tragically, it is incidents such as this – where young people bear the brunt of the negligence of road users – that remind us how critical it is to follow the rules of the road. Campaign after campaign reminds us that speed kills, that we should not text while driving, that people should not drink and drive – yet there are still drivers who disregard these messages.

With October being Transport Month in South Africa and with the festive season and its escalation in traffic looming, the DA urges road users to exercise caution by slowing down, obeying the rules of the road and staying safe.

Every one of us has a role to play in stopping the carnage that currently exists on our roads.
