On Wednesday, 21 August DA KZN Provincial Leader, Zwakele Mncwango MPL, DA KZN Spokesperson on Community Safety and Liaison, Sharon Hoosen MPL, and KZN DAWN Leader, Shehana Kajee will conduct an oversight inspection at both the Inanda and Umlazi SAPS – KZN’s worst two police stations on record when it comes to sexual offences.

According to the 2017/2018 crime statistics report, sexual offences in KZN were disproportionately higher than in other provinces, with Inanda SAPS recording the highest number of sexual related crimes in the entire country at 330 cases, 278 of which were rape.

The situation at Umlazi SAPS is not much better with the station recording 290 sexual offences – the third highest in South Africa.  A total of 252 of these cases were rape, with the station ranked second highest countrywide when it comes to this horrific crime.

In March 2019, a parliamentary question by the DA revealed that there were no rape kits for either adults or children at Inanda SAPS despite the level of crime. The same question showed that there were only 46 rape kits for adults and none for children at Umlazi SAPS.  The DA’s inspection on Wednesday will seek, amongst others, to establish whether any action has been taken to remedy this unacceptable situation.
