uMngeni Chief Whip murder – what is SAPS hiding?

Issued by Francois Rodgers, MPL – Leader of the DA in the KZN Legislature
06 May 2024 in Press Statements

Despite the DA having engaged a competent investigation and forensic team (view here) to assist SAPS following the horrific murder of uMngeni Chief Whip, Nhlalayenza Ndlovu last year, it appears that law enforcement in the province is not willing to work with or communicate with us.

As the Leader of the DA in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), I have requested a meeting with provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, both telephonically and in writing, in order to receive an update on the status of the investigation.

It has become clear that the Commissioner is avoiding any such engagement. The question is why? Right now, there are more questions than answers.

Either, SAPS do not have any information, or they have information that they are not willing to release. This is only compounding an already difficult situation and raises further suspicions around the motives behind political killings.

KZN has a long history of political violence, which includes the killing of councilors and other political stakeholders.

The DA has, on numerous occasions called on Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube to convene a round table discussion with all KZN political party leaders in a bid to find solutions. Regrettably, this appeal has been ignored to date.

When the people of our province go to the polls on 29 May, they will have the opportunity to rescue KZN and install a DA-led government – one that will ensure that the rule of law is upheld and that the safety of its citizens is prioritized.
