KwaDukuza’s imminent public fund heist

The Democratic Alliance in KwaDukuza has noted with concern that despite both SALGA and CoGTA cautioning against the appointment of Thembela Telford Nxumalo as the Executive Director for Civil Engineering at the municipality, the ANC caucus supported the deployment of a cadre who possesses the bare minimum in terms of competency.

Despite the department being the custodians of the largest budget, the ANC in KwaDukuza chose to delay the filling of this vacancy for 13 months and then decided to fill it with someone wholly unsuitable for the job.

The Democratic Alliance have today lodged a PAIA application in line with Section 18(1) of the Promotion of access to Information Act of 2000 to seek the recordings of these interviews as well as a copy of Mr Nxumalo’s registration with Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).

In addition to this, we will be obtaining confirmation from the various engineering regulatory bodies to ascertain the individuals’ membership and standing. It would certainly appear that the only two criteria for appointments in KwaDukuza is that one is a member of the ANC in good standing, and that one can create an enabling environment for grand scale looting.

While the legacy of deploying cadres to permanent positions remains deeply entrenched in KwaDukuza, the Democratic Alliance refuses to sit back and watch an imminent heist of public funds by cadres.
